Welcome to our twice-monthly bulletin! Here's what happened during the last meeting.
We tried out a new meeting location
The Aug 14 meeting was held at a beautiful new restaurant in Cobble Hill. Savelli’s (195 Smith St) is an elegant Italian eatery and they treated us very nicely, loading our table with appetizers of fried calamari, eggplant parmigiana and focaccia bread. Next course was pizza with our choice of toppings. Third course was a choice of pasta or salad. The food was plentiful and delicious! We were seated at a large table in a semi-private side nook.
Two of our three visitors added a lot of energy to the business portion of our meeting. Uchenna Nwizugbe-Ezenwa, originally from Nigeria and currently a Bed-Stuy resident, is a child psychologist with a second degree in travel and hospitality, who produces his own vlog about Africa (and many other things). Sonia Parechanian is a marketing expert for two of IDT’s apps, Boss Revolution (international calls) and Boss Money (transfer funds). We were also briefly visited by Oleg, a Rotarian from the Neva Rotary Club (Russia) who works for the UN's Sustainable Fi=oressst Management program in Central Asia. He is applying for a green card and hopes to join our club. Another visitor, Sassy, is pictured here.
After introductions , the meeting focused on two things: publicity/marketing directions to pursue, and service projects.
Our initial marketing push will be a series of short videos of our members, talking about why they joined the Brooklyn Bridge Club. These will be posted on our social media channels and embedded in our website. In addition, George, Ed and John will work on preparing a Powerpoint about the club and our members to get local websites and TV news to cover us. We will also contact RYLA parents in Brooklyn to see if they’ll become members.
Service projects discussed tonight include a possible partnership with Heights and Hills Senior Services (delivering appreciation gifts to caregivers, and Thanksgiving meals from their Park Slope Center), visiting seniors in the Cobble Hill Nursing Home, helping non-native English speakers with their English via the Red Hook and Brooklyn Heights branches of the library, and helping adults and youth improve their reading and writing skills through the library. We plan to continue making sandwiches in large quantities at Food Bazaar a couple of times this year, and work with CHIPS to serve food to hungry Brooklynites. We are still working out the schedule for this year's projects and events.
Ideas were also fleshed out about a Dog Parade fundraiser.
George attended the Verrazzano Club’s baseball game at Cyclones stadium last week, and discovered that our former club member Astruge is the manager there!
We will be joining The Verrazzano Rotary Club to meet this year's District Governor Beverly James.
It’s on Wed, August 28 at 7 pm at Gargiulo’s Restaurant, 2911 W 15th Street off Surf Avenue. Lizzette and George are driving and can provide rides there and back to the Downtown Brooklyn area. Ed and Celia can offer a ride back.
